Thread is a transgender transformation game that is VERY text heavy and uses an SRPG combat system. It has a strong focus on the story and on gender identity.

Lucas never thought of himself as special, and, frankly, he isn't.

After a brush with the supernatural during his senior year of high school, he and his friends have grown apart. Unbeknownst to him, this incident Isn't done turning his life upside down.

Almost two years pass and Lucas has nearly forgotten his encounter with the unknown. But it hasn't forgotten him. A spirit awakens within him, stranding Luc in an unfamiliar body. To return to normal, Luc is tasked with finding a missing high school classmate, and learning how to fight against the dark supernatural elements threatening the small town of Thread Creek.

Also, he has his first day of college on Monday and nothing to wear.

Transformation: The plot revolves around our protagonist dealing with a new body and a new outlook on life.

Identity: Establish the protagonist's gender identity early, and play on to see how Luc's self-conception changes.

Adult Content: This currently consists of text-only scenes. Art for these scenes will be added in a future update. The adult content exists only to explore the game's other themes and is largely optional.

  • Writing. A lot of it.
    • I think of this as a visual novel/RPG hybrid. There are around 100,000 words worth of reading in the game as of 0.4.x.
  • Characters react to your choices!
    • Thread has lots of dialogue variation hinging on the inner gender identity of the MC (Set by player choices in the prologue), social stats, and outfit choice.
  • Tactics RPG/SRPG combat.
    • Thread uses a combat system similar to fire emblem or final fantasy tactics.
    • There are no random battles, experience points or levels. Instead, engage in a few handcrafted battles that tie into the story.
  • Free-Roaming!
    • Decide what to do with your free time.
    • Day of week and time of day system!
    • Learn new combat skills for use in battle!
    • Spend time with contacts and learn their stories!
    • Study Academics, work on your Charm, or build your Courage!
    • Study the enemy to gain an edge in combat!
    • Brew potions to help with difficult fights!
    • Work at the Video Zone to earn money and boost your social stats!
    • Buy a new outfit!
    • Catch a show at the movie theater.
  • Check out the end-of-content room for bonus stories by Icosa Hedron, including a special route with a companion web fic!
  • Music and sound effects to compliment both dialogue and combat, and are more than an afterthought.
    • Thread has a few original tracks composed by Olivia Voss.
  • A good variety of character expressions created with RPG Maker’s character generator.
  • Planned Features:
    • More content (fights, story progression, features, and anything else I come up with along the way.)
    • More art!
      • Art for each Luca outfit is on the horizon!
      • CGs for important (and adult) scenes.

I want to give Luc a shadow crystal, for the funnies of course.

Well, I desire more and possible a more variety

I like it but if possible i want a major number of outfit (and not the game dont show all you choose)

what would you call a major number of outfits? more than 6?

This game is really good! I like the tf games references, I've played them all, lol.

(+1)

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed the game so far :D

(+1)

fighting the mage after the skinsnatchers is ungodly unfair.
I'm not given the choice to hold off to properly prepare, soft locking me.

(+1)

I'm glad we were able to get through this on the Discord. Thanks for your patience!

Locked when interacting with Contact button in early game.

(+1)

Are you playing the web version on mobile?

(1 edit)

Web Version on Laptop. The game froze. It was in, like, the prologue during the first fight. (IIRC)

Thanks! Were uou using firefox? The web version is buggy on that browser.

I'm using Google Chrome.

(+1)

If you are playing on mobile, you can two-finger tap on the screen to go back.

(+3)

Love this! Glad I decided to play!

(+1)

Also I managed to break it a couple times, but that’s my fault for playing on an unsupported device! (It’s not gonna stop me tho)

Basically during combat if you click anything but the start button you have to restart to save bc I’m on mobile and there’s no touchscreen options (again, my fault for not using the right device)

Also I moved and can’t do anything anymore so I gotta restart again ;-;

Again these aren’t bugs, just me being silly, so really not a big deal.

holy shit sidequests

(+4)

This game is so cute and sweet. A welcome sight I love the scenes with people as you build friendships and can't wait to see more

(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed it :D

Curious... Is it just me, or did I indeed notice reference to re:Dreamer at a few points through all this gameplay?

(+2)

There may be a couple references in there ;)

(+3)

Nice! I love the game you're making, by the way, and I am eagerly (but patiently) awaiting more.

(+2)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm very glad you enjoyed it!

(+3)

How much we betting that Luca's mom was a previous host of a guardian (probably Aurora)? I am just imagining Aurora having a moment of shock as she sees the necklace and realizes that she remembers it from her previous host. It would fit, given all the other hosts were cis women.

(+1)

I can neither confirm nor deny ;)

(+1)

yoo, Did I see a reference to a ZoeStorm Story in the new content update?

You did! You can blame me for recommending it to Rewind >:3

(+3)

Very nice game with good story and characters. I actually found myself caring quite a bit for these goobers. Can't wait for updates :3. The biggest complaint I have is that it would be nice to have art for all the different clothing sets, that's the only obvious placeholder that I noticed. Anyway, other than that, this game has been a blast!

(+1)

Art for the rest of the outfits is in the works!

(1 edit)

hey, great game, I just have 1 complaint, and that is once you reach the end of week 2 you're not aloud to continue playing. I really like the game and the story is great, I just want to be able to see all the content currently available to me without starting a new playthrough. I'm not a dev so I don't know the reasons for this, but this makes seeing all of the content fairly tedious because there is a decent chunk of it crammed into such a short time frame, and the requirements make it worse. having content gated behind certain stat requirements is fine, but with how much in game time they take to increase it pretty much guarantees that multiple play throughs are needed to see all of the side content. with that out of the way, the game is great, keep up the good work.

edit: just realized that I didn't specify that this is for the side content, obviously the main story should need multiple playthroughs or save scumming to see.

(+1)

Hi there, and thank you for playing and for your kind words. As for continuing to play after hitting end of content, that is tricky to do while keeping saves compatible with the next version of the game. Perhaps I could disable saving and do some kind of endless mode when you reach end of content. I'll look into doing something like that in a future release.

I've run into a hardlock where, on the night of the raid in week 1, right before you actually enter the abandoned store, Aurora's second text will simply not appear and I can't progress. Don't know what caused this. I am playing in browser.

This is my third playthrough, here's what I've done this time -

Shirt on for swimming, Dreamt as a boy, showed empathy to the monster

Studied four times at my desk

Learned Ice Lance

Studied the Skin Walkers

Told Sarah about the Skin Walkers

Cleared Riverside before Sarah's failed attack

Got clothes from Coolies

Have no idea if this will help you identify where the bug comes from but I hope it helps. Looking forward to future updates!

Thank you for the bug report! Was there an error message when the game hard locked? I did a playthrough recreating your steps, and I haven't been able to get the hard lock to occur.

Ah, I think I may have found it! I just reloaded and decided on a whim to change my clothing, see if that fixed it. It did! I switched to wearing the flannel option at some point, and I changed back to the pink blouse and I'm bug free! Hope this helps pinpoint the issue!

ah! Okay, got it! Yeah, the flannel is bugged, unfortunately. Thanks for the detailed report, I appreciate it!

Looks interesting - I see only notes about more art in the planned features, so does that mean the main story is finished?

(+1)

Nope, the main story is in active development.

(+2)

Very fun game with enjoyable writing.

Lovely

After moving your saves from version 0.3.0 or 0.3.1 to 0.3.2, please use the dresser to change outfits at least once to avoid a crash. You can change to a different outfit then back to your desired outfit then save to fix the issue.

(+1)

as a side note, while you're in your dresser (in 3.2) you may find an outfit that hasn't been fully implemented yet (flannel and skinny jeans). It's a neat preview of future fashion, but wearing it in certain scenes will crash your game, so be careful.

I tried to play with joiplay but it gives error any way to fix this?

What is the error message you are getting? I might be able to assist. Alternatively, I've heard that the game runs on Maldives (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.miririt.maldivesplayer&hl=en-U...)

I enabled PisxiJS v5 setting it seems to fix some errors that appear, I really don't know.

With PixiJS v5 on:-

With PixiJS v5 off:-

I'm doing some research to see if there is anything I can do to make Thread run on JOI Play. Alternatively, you could try the web version. It works on mobile.

"I really like your outfit. That dress looks good on you."

"Really? Thanks! My friend actually helped me with it"

"[What the fuck am I saying]"

this game's peak.

(+4)

That whole scene is such a recently-cracked-egg moment. I love it. Reminds me of one of my few happy high school memories.

im stuck in the locker room and i dont know how to get out help TwT

I'd be glad to help. It seems you've run into a bug. Are you playing in the web browser or did you download the game? Can you send me a screenshot of where you are stuck?

i've tried it on both and i get stuck, idk if im just dumb or not lol

This is definitely a bug. You should not be able to leave Luc's dorm on Saturday Night. Did you do the part where you go back to the river with just Sarah?

yeah

There should be a fight at the end of that scene, then you get sent back to Luc's dorm. From there you are supposed to sleep. Are you able to interact with the bed instead of leaving? Also, did you start this game on the current version (0.2.2A) Or did you load a save from an earlier version?

(+2)

awesome

Thank you!

This game is still very early in development but is so promising. It does stuff with RPGMaker that most games wouldn't bother to deal with. The combat is actually fun (rare) and you have a great deal of autonomy with how you approach your days.

(1 edit) (+1)

Very interesting SRPG game in RPG Maker.

Current Linux version has bugs though, if you are on Linux and it does not launch for you then update your node.js. Hopefully RPG Maker can fix this three year old bug.
